Feature comparison
UNLIMITED WORKSPACE
ProdGoal and Monday have an unlimited number of projects or workspaces that you can create.
TEMPLATES
Both in Monday and ProdGoal you can create projects from templates to get you started easily. You can also build it using custom features and customize it later however it suits you.
UNLIMITED BOARDS
The same goes with boards. You get unlimited boards per project where you can organize your workflow the way it suits you and your team the best. ProdGoal’s unlimited boards are made with Kanban methodology in mind, so it brings all Kanban-related features to the table, or should I say, to the board.
UNLIMITED COLUMNS PER BOARD
And that’s where the similarities between Monday and ProdGoal end. While Monday has a limited number of columns you can create, ProdGoal lets you create an unlimited number of columns on a board. ProdGoal columns’ features are WIP limits, where you can set min and max limits, column types, type categories, and column policies.
The WIP limits change color to warn when going near or over the limit. This doesn’t affect the item creation or deletion in any way, however.
The column types have their color. You can create as many of them as you need. 5 predefined column type categories exist to place the column types in.
UNLIMITED ITEMS
Unlike Monday, where you can create up to 1000 items, with ProdGoal there is an unlimited number of items you can create. Item types are also there to help you better organize the items.
The types are color-coded for easier recognition. They are unlimited also and you can create as many item types as you need. The categories in which you can place the item types can be created without a limit too.
There is a blocker flagging feature enabled, which helps to better communicate if an item is being blocked by another item. Then the item’s background turns to red if this option is on.
In ProdGoal you can assign tasks to any number of team members. An hourglass icon is there to show the card’s time spent in a status.
As for item attachments, Monday gives 500 MB of storage space in its free plan. ProdGoal has an integration with Google Drive so you never have to worry about running out of space.
UNLIMITED USERS/GUESTS
There is no limit on the number of members you can invite. Not only that, but you can immediately assign them a task, whether they accepted the invitation or not.
If you want to invite guests to your Monday projects, you can invite up to 4 guests, in that 4 guests count as 1 seat for billing purposes. So you can’t invite guests for free. In ProdGoal you can.
UNLIMITED STORAGE
As I already mentioned storage in the items section, ProdGoal gives its users 5MB of internal storage space, but with Google Drive integration it becomes unlimited. Monday offers 500 MB of its internal storage.
NEXT-GEN ROADMAP
A feature unique to ProdGoal is the next-gen roadmap feature. Very flexible and easy to use, it offers advanced features for organizing the workflow. Columns and rows are collapsible to allow maximum focus on the tasks at hand.
WIP limits are also available in roadmap columns, just like in the board columns. You have 5 predefined column categories at your disposal.
Roadmap cards can be connected to board items. There is a progress bar on the roadmap card so you can track the progress of the board items’ status.
Another feature that can be found in the roadmap cards is a rich-text editor where you can describe the task in detail.
AUTOMATIC ESTIMATES
ProdGoal groups have a separate item view where you can organize tasks. You can make an unlimited number of groups as well. The thing with groups is that they automatically estimate when the tasks will be finished. The calculations are based on historical data. The accuracy of the calculations is determined by the number of tasks in the “Done” status category.
Additional options for the items in a group are made possible. You can connect the items to the roadmap cards in the item dropdown menu.
Why is ProdGoal an awesome Monday alternative?
It’s free
ProdGoal is free forever. All features included can be used without limitation. The credit card is not needed and there are no additional fees. You would need to upgrade to a paid plan to use features like these in Monday.
It is flexible
While Monday has a lot of flexibility, in the end, it is just a glorified Excel sheet. You can shape ProdGoal any way you like to best suit your and your team’s needs. The sidebar can show or hide the features you want or don’t want in focus. The same thing goes for collapsible roadmap columns and rows, as well as groups.
It is easy to use
The learning curve is not steep. ProdGoal’s simple and intuitive design lets you start using it right away. With a centralized dashboard, you can access and see all of the workflows from a wider perspective.
In Monday, things get a little difficult to handle when the workload gets larger as it expands to multiple views, through which you have to dig to find what you need.
It is really Agile
Easily get a broader perspective so you are in line with the big picture. Because all views are on one page, it helps you save time, and you can see if everything is in order. On the other hand, in Monday you have to navigate a complicated workflow which can lead to a loss of time and focus.
