When you start with Kanban Tool or ProdGoal, a prepopulated board welcomes you to make your onboarding as easy as possible. There are several templates to choose from in both tools.

Unfortunately, unlimited boards in Kanban Tool are not available in the free plan. You will have to make do with just 2 boards at your disposal. In ProdGoal you are allowed to create an unlimited number of boards.

Both tools have unlimited columns per board. Kanban Tool columns have all the features necessary for a good workflow organization. Just as ProdGoal does. But the slight advantage would have to go to ProdGoal because it is easier to get around to customizing the tool.

Speaking of features, there are WIP limits that can be set for each column. ProdGoal’s WIP limit feature has the option to set min and max limits while Kanban Tool’s can just set a general limit.

Column types are the next important feature. Kanban Tool has 4 predefined column types while ProdGoal has dynamic types of which there can be an unlimited number. ProdGoal also has column type categories and they are predefined but can be renamed.

Kanban Tool and ProdGoal also have an option to set column policy for each column.

Both tools have unlimited tasks. The tasks also have types and they are unlimited too. They are color-coded to give you better communication with the team members. A feature Kanban Tool lacks and ProdGoal doesn’t is type categories for items. These function just as column categories.

You can mark a task blocked and this is true for both tools. They have similar behavior as the task’s background becomes red to emphasize the message.

In Kanban Tool you can assign only one member to a task, while in ProdGoal you can assign all the members who are working on it.

Tasks also have an attachment feature. Unfortunately, again, Kanban Tool doesn’t offer its storage in the free plan, so you will have the option to only link to the external sources unless you upgrade the pricing plan. ProdGoal gives 5MB of storage but there is integration with Google Drive so you can link your disk and get unlimited storage space.

Kanban Tool allows only 2 users in the free plan. ProdGoal doesn’t have that limit. You can invite as many members as you need.

As already stated, Kanban Tool doesn’t provide any storage unless you upgrade to a higher plan. ProdGoal has integration with Google Drive so you can use it as storage space for your projects.

ProdGoal’s unlimited boards are made with Kanban methodology in focus. Board’s columns have features like WIP (work in progress) limits, both minimum and maximum limits, column types, and categories. You can also define policies. And it is easily configurable.

ProdGoal’s WIP limits are color-coded and change color to warn when approaching or going over the limit. Kanban Tool has an option only to set a high WIP limit in its free plan, while it is possible to set both low and high WIP limits in ProdGoal. You can still make new tasks and delete them as normal, even if you crossed the limit.

The column types are color-coded and you can create as many column types as you need. There are 5 built-in column type categories to place the types in and those are - ”Backlog”, “To Do”, “Doing”, “Done and Archive”.

Automatic estimates are a ProdGoal feature that forecasts the completion date of all tasks inside one group. Group view is a feature where you order tasks that are going to be estimated. But first, you have to have a couple of tasks done so the calculation could run in the first place.

In this group view, there is also an option to connect the tasks in a group with roadmap cards. Kanban Tool doesn’t have a feature like this.

Kanban Tool doesn’t have any timeline feature, at least not in the free plan. It is mainly focused on the board view. But ProdGoal has a valuable feature that can help you put work into perspective.

Next-gen roadmap consists of rows and columns. Rows have a rich-text editor so you can “paint the picture” for strategy and business goals. Columns, as well as rows, can be collapsed to not get in the way of important work.

The WIP limits are also there, as well as policies, types, and categories which gives great flexibility to the work process.

Roadmap cards differ a little from their board counterpart. They have a progress bar that indicates how many of the connected board items have been finished.
